It operates very similarly to Sketch Cloud, but is much more powerful. Zeplin specifically is a web or desktop tool, but doesn't have any file associated with it. The only way to preserve and share Sketch's native prototyping is to use Zeplin or Sketch Cloud, AFAIK. It's a different model than the traditional Adobe route of passing off a file or comps. Either so that devs can also inspect the designs or so that you can get more complex prototyping functionality. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Sketch and surrounding tools, but the most common way to share with others is via different tools like Zeplin, Abstract, InVision, Marvel, Proto.io, Sketch Cloud etc. There aren't really any ways to share prototypes through Sketch files.
